MTNL IPTV foray faces Trai roadblock
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  28 Feb 2008

The regulator Trai has shot off a letter to MTNL seeking clarifications to know why MTNL has violated license conditions under which a basic service operator (BSO) cannot offer value-added services such as IPTV. According to the regulator MTNL has reported IPTV tariffs and providing it as a value-added service under the BSO license.

Observers say that MTNL will now have to apply for UASL in case in wants to continue offering IPTV services. This will result in Rs.401 crore to the PSU for Delhi and Mumbai circles.

MTNL though is confident that it has not violated any license clause. Company Chairman R S P Sinha claimed that the company has been offering IPTV services for last two years now and the company considered IPTV services as a VAS offering to basic service subscribers.
