Review: Samsung Galaxy S III - The best smartphone ever

Why to buy:

This is one of the most popular high-end phones in India. It has functions such as S beam, S voice, and buddy photo share that are introduced for the first time. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, dual core processor, and a strong 8-megapixel adds glamour to the phone.

Why to avoid:

Its weight is comparatively heavy. Its “S Voice” consumes battery very fast.

Our Take:

It is an amazing phone with creative software advancements. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is beautifully crafted in perfect shape and big screen. For Galaxy lovers, this is a good buy. It has competition from HTC One X. We have given it one of the highest ratings of 4.5.

Detailed Review

Design:

With not much competition, Samsung Galaxy S III (S3) is simply the best Smartphone. The phone is a perfect fit in hand. If one compares it with HTC One X and Apple, the flagship Samsung Galaxy S3 may not impress with its body and design. However, its glossy white and pebble blue colors have worked for GS3. The handsets dimension of 5.4 inches height and 2.8 inches wide is slightly larger and thicker than other Samsung handsets, except Galaxy Note. The Galaxy S3 has 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display which is almost same in size with its competitor HTC One X. The screen resolution is a bit dimmer.

Interface/OS:

Samsung Galaxy S3 runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich that works best for the device. In addition, Samsung has come up with Android Beam as its unique feature.

Features:

Its long list of strong features include - S Beam, S Voice, NFC, All Share Play, Group Cast, Buddy Photo Share, SmartStay, Share Photo, All share Play, and Group Cast. All these features are impressive and simple. Only All Share Play and Group Cast were complicated and tough to set up and use. S beam is built on Android Beam for ICS (Ice cream Sandwich) platform. Through S Beam, Sharing Videos, Documents and large photo files with the help of NFC and Wi-Fi Direct becomes simpler and easier as it works flawless.

S Voice, another great innovation, is Samsung’s reply to “Apple Siri”. To launch S voice you need to say Hello Galaxy near to the mouth piece or either by double pressing the home key. S Voice is smart enough to send e-mails, text messages, take images, video shoot, answer call, searching web, voice dial, even launching smart apps and much more. But its main drawback is that it consumes battery very fast. All Share play and Group cast are features that help in multimedia sharing using DLNA and Wi-Fi Direct protocols. Another efficient GS3 setting is SmartStay, which scans your pupils from the front-facing camera and if it observes that you are looking on the screen, it would not dim the screen light. This helps when you read, watch video, or study a map.

Camera/Video:

Samsung Galaxy S3 has an 8 megapixel main camera with backlit sensor and LED flash and 1.9 megapixel front facing camera. GS3 has come up with couple of good features for camera like Buddy Photo Share with which, one can e-mail or text an image to the person one tags in it. It is received in the receivers Received menu. Another important feature is ShareShot in this camera mode Wi-Fi Direct automatically send photos to the person you shoot.

The Video quality is also amazing. The sound/audio comes in loud and clear, colours remain sharp and crisp. It plays back the video uninterrupted/smoothly that we shoot. And even same with the downloaded videos.

The Galaxy S3 has a very impressive but small feature for videos, wherein you can reduce the size of your video to a thumbnail size and you can move it out from your gallery. You can drag the thumbnail any corner around your screen and you can perform other things along. Such as: messaging, browsing web and etc. and video quality remains the same.

Performance:

Call quality: Calls made by GS3 were loud and clear. Even on speaker mode the sound was audible and clear. In high sound places such as market or eateries the sound come soft but the quality remains good.

Data speed:

The 3G data speed is fast and blazing. It delivers uninterrupted downloading, with no need to wait for buffering to complete and hassle free web browsing.

Battery:

The Galaxy S3 has a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, and it has a 2,100mAh battery, which is massive, but not an ideal fit for such a big phone. However the battery life is good and even fair on 3G. S Voice drains the battery fast.

Conclusion:

With a large number of excellent features and functions, Samsung Galaxy S3 has set a benchmark for its close competitors - HTC One X and Apple. The only advantage HTC One X has over Galaxy S3 is its better screen resolution. The 1.5 dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 1 GB RAM has worked well with GS3. With its forceful promotion strategy, Samsung has an advantage over HTC One X and Apple. We consider it one of the best high end phones.
