Uninor, a joint venture between Norwegian Telenor and realty major Unitech who is set to lose 22 2G licences following the Supreme Court’s February has said that it is in talks with other companies to find a new partner and make a fresh beginning.
Addressing the media Uninor Managing Director Sigve Brekke said that while the matter is in the court, the company is looking for a new ally. "We are not even thinking about what Unitech did”, he said.
He said that the company always focuses on long term strategies in the countries where it operates. The company has so far invested about Rs 15,000 crore in India.
He said that the company is in dialogue with the interested parties and has applied for FIPB ( Foreign Investment Promotion Board). He said that the company has to first settle the issue with its current JV partner Unitech and then make efforts to identify a new partner.
Telenor is locked in a legal battle with Unitech over the control of Uninor with the later having already moved the Company Law Board seeking arbitration in the dispute.
To a question whether Uninor has lost customers following the apex court order, he said that it is slightly below industry average.
Brekke claimed in February that the company rose to second position in Tamil Nadu circle as it added 3.21 lakh customers after Aircel''s 3.43 lakh.
In Tamil Nadu Uninor has about 3,500 retailers and has more than 19 lakh customers. |
