Former Director General, Audit, RP Singh''s deposition before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) over the 2G spectrum allocation scam began on Monday (November 14). Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India Vinod Rai will meanwhile depose before the committee tomorrow.
While deposing before the JPC, RP Singh is said to have stuck to his stand. He reportedly said, "I stand by what I said in my report. The rest was done over my head."
Their hearings come amid reports of rifts within the government's top auditing agency over its report on the 2G scam that had first brought the scam under wide scale scrutiny last year after estimating losses from the illogical sale of mobile airwaves at Rs 1.76 lakh crore.
According to media reports, Singh, then principal auditor and Director General of Post and Telecommunication who conducted the audit, could have been kept away from the final draft of the report and coerced into signing it without being given time to review it.
Singh had supposedly valued the loss to the national exchequer from the 2G scam at Rs. 2,645 crore, far less from the CAG’s final estimate. |
