Russia, Norway approached government on cancellation of 2G licences: Milind Deora
TT Correspondent |  |  15 Mar 2012

The government on Wednesday admitted that Russia and Norway have approached it on the issue of cancellation of spectrum licences by the Supreme Court in its February 2 judgment to argue the case of their companies Sistema Shyam and Telenor respectively.

The Supreme Court in February cancelled all the 122 2G licences allotted in 2008 during the tenure of the former telecom minister A Raja. These included 21 licences of SSTL and 22 licences of Unitech Wireless, in which Norwegian firm Telenor has over 67 percent stake.

The government on Wednesday informed the parliament that Russian government has conveyed that Sistema Shyam Telecommunications Ltd. (SSTL) has invested over US$ 3 billion in the Telecom sector, but its license has been cancelled due to some legal problems which they understand but this is a matter of serious concern for its investors.

Norwegian Government has sought an interaction to discuss the verdict of the Supreme Court on the cancellation of the 2G licences which involves the Norwegian company, Telenor.
