Monek Singh Ahluwalia gives short shrift to Presidential Reference on the 2G case
TT Correspondent |  |  26 Mar 2012

Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia has said that the government should implement the Supreme Court’s February 2 verdict canceling all the 122 spectrum licences instead of making a Presidential Reference on the 2G case.

In a letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Ahluwalia had opposed the move saying that there is nothing to be gained by making a Presidential reference on the lines of the draft. If a reference has to be made, it must clearly state that the Government''s position on key issues but I do not know if that would be appropriate.

Early this month one of the options that the government had explored was to make a Presidential Reference to the Supreme Court on its 2G judgement in the light of spectrum auction and the First Come , First Serve policy.

While favoring implementation of 2G auction in ‘good faith’ he said that a Group of Ministers entrusted with the task of tackling issues like spectrum pricing could be constituted. This could make recommendations to the Government after considering the options of the Telecom Ministry.
