ZTE mobile phones for children reach one million sales in Japan
TT Correspondent |  |  24 Jan 2013

ZTE Corporation, a publicly-listed global provider of telecommunications equipment, network solutions and mobile devices, on Thursday announced that sales of its series of mobile phones for children in Japan had surpassed the one million units mark by the end of 2012.

“This is an important milestone for the company showing that ZTE handsets have won recognition in the Japanese market as a result of the company’s overseas growth strategy”, the company said in a statement. .

The ZTE mobile phones for children are customised for the use of primary school kids. They operate on the basis of a buzzer where children can enter phone numbers in advance and press one centre button to dial and send messages showing their location. This simple functionality makes the handsets suitable for a variety of age groups from children to the elderly.

The first ZTE mobile phone for children, “005Z” was released in Japan in March 2011 in collaboration with Japanese carrier SoftBank. It was well received by users and was followed by a substantial growth of the market for mobile phones for children in the country. In April 2012, ZTE launched another phone from the series, 101Z”, which offered a further simplified user experience.  By the end of 2012, the sales of the two mobile phones exceeded one million units.

As a part of its growth strategy for the Japanese market, ZTE plans to launch series of high-end mobile devices, in addition to the current handsets. ZTE is now the 4th biggest smartphone manufacturer in the world according to IDC, a leading provider of global ICT market research and advisory services.
