On its 9th birthday Facebook grapples with fake or undesirable accounts
TT Correspondent |  |  04 Feb 2013

World’s biggest social networking site Facebook is celebrating its 9th birthday but the occasion has been marred by the fact that it has over 76 million fake user accounts. Even its efforts to curb this though spam filters have done little.

Facebook has declared said that its monthly active users (MAUs) during fourth quarter 2012 were 1.06 billion registering an increase of 25% year-over-year.

Its daily active users (DAUs) were 618 million on average for December 2012, an increase of 28% while mobile MAUs were 680 million. It said that mobile DAUs exceeded web DAUs for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2012.

But the concerns remain that “undesirable” accounts has decreased by 0.9 percent of the total number of monthly active users. According to Facebook, an “undesirable” user is any account that is intended to be used for purposes that violate our terms of service, such as spamming.”

Then there are duplicate accounts which are added to total number of valid users. Duplicate account is an account that a user maintains in addition to his or her principal account. They account for about 5 percent or 53 million accounts of Facebook monthly active users. There are 13.8 million mischaracterized accounts, which according to Facebook are pages.

Countries where Facebook in terms users enjoys maximum popularity are-US, India, Brazil,  Indonesia and Mexico. It is much ahead other social networks like Google+, Twitter and LinkedIn.
