Apple has confirmed its acquisition of WiFiSlam, a startup known for making mapping applications. These applications range from step-by-step indoor navigation, to product-level retail customer engagement, to proximity-based social networking.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, the amount involved in acquisition is $20 million. Apple has not given any reason for the buy-out.
Google's application, Google Maps, is widely accessed on Google's Android platform and rival Apple's rival iOS platform, according to Reuters.
“The two-year-old startup has developed ways for mobile apps to detect a phone user’s location in a building using Wi-Fi signals. It has been offering the technology to application developers for indoor mapping and new types of retail and social networking apps. The company has a handful of employees, and its co-founders include former Google software engineering intern Joseph Huang”, Apple told Macrumors.
