Issuing its recommendations on the “IMT, Advanced Mobile Wireless Broadband Services, the regulator TRAI has proposed that India should adopt APT700 band plan for the 700 MHz spectrum band (698-806 MHz) with FDD based 2x45 MHz frequency arrangement.
700 Mhz band is considered a superior spectrum band, for 4G services which are taking roots in India with operators like Bharti Airtel having already launched in many cities. Videocon has also promised 4G services by the end of this year.
To seek views of stakeholders on the issue and facilitate the deployment of International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) - Advanced technologies in the country, TRAI suo motu issued a Consultation paper on ‘IMT, Advanced Mobile Wireless Broadband Services’ on 19th August 2011.
“Some of these issues, which were mainly regulatory in nature, got covered in the recommendation on ‘Auction of Spectrum’ dated 23rd April, 2012” TRAI said in statement.
TRAI said that as the eco system for IMT technology is still evolving, it is of the opinion that only after the roll out of services using IMT, Advanced technologies, remaining issues, which are technical in nature viz. Quality of Service, Impact of Femto Cell etc., can be better addressed.
