Bharti Airtel Lanka, which was the fasted operator to reach the 1 million customers mark in Sri Lanka did not participate in the auction for 4G spectrum.
According to the director general of Sri Lnaka's Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, Anusha Palpita, said that only three operators namely Malaysia's Dialog Axiata, Mobitel and Etisalat took part in the auction held on Thursday. Dialog Axiata has emerged as the successful bidder.
Sri Lanka will become the first south Asian country to roll out the nationwide 4G services has five telecom operators. The Lankan government had fixed 800 million Lankan rupees as base price. Sri Lankan regulator allocated spectrum to Dialog Axiata for $26.25 million
Airtel Lanka is the latest entrant to Lanka’s growing mobile telephone market was surprisingly absent in the bidding. With its network footprint panned out across the country in less than 2 years from launch, Airtel has emerged as Sri Lanka’s fastest expanding network.
Airtel provides digital mobile services to Sri Lanka inclusive of voice telephony, voice mail, data services and GSM based services. All of these services are provided under the Airtel brand.
