Mobile subscriber base in India declines to 867.02 million in April

The mobile subscriber base in the country decreased from 867.80 million in March 2013 to 867.02 million at the end of April 2013, registering a monthly growth of -0.09%., according latest data released by Trai. 
 
The regulator said that the decline is largely due to disconnections by some of the service providers.
 
The share of urban mobile subscribers has decreased from 60.53% to 60.11% where as share of rural wireless subscribers has increased from 39.47% to 39.89%. The overall mobile teledensity in India has reached 70.71 from 70.85 of previous month. Mobile subscription in urban areas decreased from 525.30 million in March 2013 to 521.18 million at the end of April 2013. The mobile subscription in rural areas increased from 342.50 million to 345.85 million during the same period. The urban mobile Teledensity has decreased from 140.67 to 139.33 and rural Teledensity has increased from 40.23 to 40.59.
 
State-run BSNL and MTS lost 22.36 lakh and 18.96 lakh users respectively. They are followed by Tata Teleservices with 7.84 lakh , MTNL 1 lakh, Loop Mobile 83,263 and HFCL 15,616 customers.
 
Vodafone added highest 14.22 lakh new customers  followed by Idea Cellular with 12.84 lakh, Reliance Communications 7.25 lakh, Bharti Airtel 6 lakh, Uninor 1.6 lakh, Videocon 1.3 lakh and Aircel 8,249.
 
 Bharti Airtel continues to remain at the top with with 18.87 crore customers for a 21.78 percent share. Vodafone had 15.37 crore customers and a share of 17.74 percent, followed by RCom with 12.36 crore customers and a 14.27 percent share.
 
The number of telephone subscribers in India decreased to 897.02 million at the end of April, 2013 from 898.02 million at the end of March 2013, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of -0.11%. The share of urban subscribers has decreased to 60.71% from 61.11% whereas share of rural subscribers has increased from 38.89% to 39.29% in the month of April 2013. With this, the overall Teledensity in India decreased to 73.16 at the end of April, 2013 from 73.32 of the previous month.

Subscription in the urban areas decreased from 548.80 million in February, 2013 to 544.55 million at the end of April, 2013. Subscription in rural areas increased from 349.22 million to 352.47 million during the same period. The monthly growth rate of urban and rural subscription is -0.77% and 0.93% respectively. The overall urban Teledensity has decreased from 146.96 to 145.58 and Rural Teledensity increased from 41.02 to 41.37.
