Nokia loses to Samsung in India, Micromax at No. 3

South Korean handset giant Samsung has emerged as top handset seller with a market share of 31.5% in India in FY12 dislodging Finnish giant Nokia who ruled the Indian market for over a decade. Nokia accounted for 27.2% market share during the period.

According to a Voice and Data survey, in terms of revenue, Samsung rose to 11,328 crore from Rs 7,891 crore in FY12 registering a growth of 43.6%. Nokia’s revenue on the other hand fell to Rs 9,780 crore from Rs 11,925 crore in FY12 with wa significant 18% drop in revenue.

On the strength on in its sales strategy last fiscal like EMI schemes and appointing Ingram Micro and Redington as the national distributors for their entire sales Apple “grew a mammoth 417.2% to post revenues of Rs 1,293 crore in FY13 compared to Rs 250 crore a year back”. Though Apple never focused on Indian market like Samsung and Nokia It managed to grab 3.6% market share in the country.

According to the survey, overall, the Indian mobile handset market reported revenues of Rs 35,946 crore in FY 13 compared to Rs 31,330 crore in FY12 registering a growth of 14.7%. This has been attributed  mainly due to the increasing uptake in Smartphones by the Indian consumers.

Here is good news for domestic handset manufacturers. Despite few stumbling blocks in FY12 and the first quarter of FY13, Micromax which captured the imagination of the handset buyers with its Canvan series smartphones has grabbed number 3 slot with a market share of 8.7%. Following Micromax closely at number 4 is Karbonn mobiles which a market share of 6.4%. Other Indian handset makers like Lava and Zen also did well.

"The rise of smaller local players like Micromax, Karbon, Lava, and Zen is a clear indication that consumers want cheaper feature rich phones. The next phase of mobile penetration in the bottom of the pyramid India will be driven by these companies", says Ibrahim Ahmad, Group Editor of Voice&Data.

Gurgaon based Micromax  grew by 58.6%. By the end of the last fiscal, the company posted revenues of Rs 3,138 crore compared to Rs 1,978 crore in FY12. With this Micromax enjoys a market share of 8.7%.

In FY13, Karbonn grew by 73.1% to register revenues of Rs 2,297 crore compared to Rs 1,327 crore in FY12. IN FY 2013 Karbonn grew by 32%.
