Kobo forays into Indian market, launches Touch, Glo and Aura HD e-readers, Arc Android tablet in India

With struggling BlackBerry losing ground in India, another Canadian firm Kobo known for devices like Kobo Touch, Kobo Mini, Kobo Glo, Kobo Aura HDand Kobo Aura has forayed into Indian market with the launch of four devices.  They are priced between Rs. 7,999 and 13,999.

The products that the company launched include three e-readers and a tablet PC. Kobo is planning to sell two lakh e-readers in the next one and half years.

Executive Vice President and General Manager Wayne White informed that company in order to be successful in India, the company will have to customise a device for the market here, which is likely to come next year. .

“As e-commerce continues to expand and demand for digital content continues to grow, we are thrilled to be launching in India and look forward to introducing passionate readers to our world-class digital reading platform,” White added.

Readers will have access to Kobo’s eBookstore, featuring nearly 4-million titles across 68 languages. The eBookstore has everything from top-selling Indian authors including Jhumpa Lahiri, Ramachandra Guha and Sachin Garg to international bestselling authors like Dan Brown, John Grisham and Lee Child.

The costliest of all is the Kobo Aura HD which has a price tag of Rs 13,999. It features a 6.8-inch Pearl E-Ink touchscreen. It comes with built-in front-lit technology and it is touted to have enough juice to last for around 2 months.

Priced at Rs 10,999 Kobo Glo eReader comes with the adjustable Comfort Light technology to enable people to read anytime - day or night. It features also has a 6-inch Pearl E-Ink touchscreen. Its battery, according company’s claims lasts for one month.

The 7-inch The Kobo Arc runs on Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean) and is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor and has 16GB of storage. It is priced at Rs 11,999.

Kobo Touch priced will be available for Rs 11,999 and Rs 6,999, respectively, till November 3. Kobo says it will initially offer content only in English, but has plans to offer content in other Indian languages in future.
