The government will revisit the merger and acquisition guidelines for the telecom sector, if need arises, before the next auction slated to begin in February, communications and information technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Wednesday at a discussion at the India Economic Summit organized by the World Economic Forum, Reports PTI.
"I have already constituted a committee headed by Telecom Secretary to revisit guidelines...I have instructed the Secretary to look into issues of stakeholders and if there is a need to revisit merger and acquisition guidelines, do that," Prasad said at the India Economic Summit.
Telecom players have been pushing for a relaxation of M&A rules and a framework to buy and sell spectrum.
The committee's first meeting took place today wherein industry associations raised their concerns.
TRAI had also said M&A rules need to be reworked and defence should be put to auction with the spectrum in 900 and 1800 MHz bands as well.
Government is also pushing electronics manufacturing in a big way and is granting substantial incentives for cluster manufacturing.
He also highlighted the importance of National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) mission to provide high-speed broadband connectivity to 2.50 lakh gram panchayats in India by March, 2017 and he also wants his government to be available to every citizen on a mobile phone.
Spectrum trading and sharing guidelines would be in place by the end of this year. |
