Indian richest man and Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, on Thursday announced the commercial launch of Reliance Jio at the Reliance Industries Limited 42nd Annual General Meeting. With this announcement, major telcos like Airtel and Vodafone will have to plan and rethink their strategy to stand against Reliance Jio.
Reliance Jio will charge Rs 50 per GB of data with basic plan starting at Rs 149 per month for basic users to Rs 4,999 for heavy users. Students will get 25 per cent more data and incentives on Jio’s main tariffs.
From September 5, everyone will be able to access the service, which will still be free till the end of the year. Voice calls, meanwhile, will never be charged on the Jio service. The data rates are also cheapest in the world, he said, announcing tariffs starting Rs 50 per GB or 5 paise per MB. The entire bouquet of apps will also be free till end of 2017.
