Alcatel-Lucent has partnered with SkyTerra and TerreStar Networks to develop a mobile network technology that incorporates EV-DO-based satellite communications technology into an Alcatel-Lucent base station.
On integrating 3G technology and satellite networks, Qualcomm will allow SkyTerra and TerreStar Networks dish out high-quality mobile voice and data coverage to remote and uncovered areas across North America.
Further, the tie up will find Alcatel-Lucent work with SkyTerra and TerreStar to develop satellite base station sub-systems, or S-BSS, based on Qualcomm’s Satellite DO technology, a satellite-adapted implementation of CDMA/EV-DO.
The satellite-adapted EV-DO base station, developed by Alcatel-Lucent is believed to rise as a key component of SkyTerra’s and TerreStar’s integrated satellite-terrestrial networks.
“The S-BSS being developed by Alcatel-Lucent is a central and critical component of SkyTerra’s next-generation network,” said Brian Deobald, vice president of technology and product development at SkyTerra, in a release.
According to company officials, the networks are designed to offer uninterrupted voice and data service coverage throughout North America. |
