Nokia set to change navigational services offering landscape
TT Bureau |  |  01 Jun 2009

Nokia is all set to scale up the end-user experience of navigational services and aims to provide a comprehensive and holistic offering. The company plans to design its services revolved around the concept of being contextual and location focused.

Last week the company unveiled its new Ovi Maps version to be available on the online as well as mobile medium. The offerings will also allow users to explore, save and share location-relevant information.

Not only this, the company also introduced Ovi Maps Player application programming interface allowing third party to embed the Ovi maps functionality into a website using JavaScript.

Gartner''s Thilo Koslowski while analysing the development says that the new initiatives by Nokia illustrate that the company aims to attain market leadership position with three main features as mentioned below:

  • Nokia’s enhanced, high-resolution Ovi Maps, which include 2-D and 3-D views, expanded point of interest (POI) data and real-time traffic information.
  • The ability to wirelessly synchronize data between the Web and the mobile phone, which goes beyond current single-directional “sent-to-car” functionality such as Google Maps.
  • The Ovi Maps Player, which initially will be available on Windows PC browsers only.

Gartner says that Nokia may also integrate and promote other Ovi services on Ovi Maps. It is also likely to resort to advertising as avenue for generating revenues using the location-based advertising solution developed by its subsidiary, Navteq.

According to Gartner if implemented properly, Nokia's new location-based service offerings can impact industry players associated with sectors such as automakers, suppliers, telematics service providers and, especially, navigation solution providers.
