BSNL which is struggling to keep a check on its dwindling revenues, appears to have identified a very high potential avenue for revenue generation, the telecom infrastructure opportunity.
Having forged agreements with Aircel and Tata Teleservices last month, the PSU today notched up another contract with Videocon-owned Datacom.
BSNL has set up a separate infrastructure wing under New Business group that is actively marketing the passive infrastructure assets for use by private operators. As an integrated offering, BSNL is bundling bandwidth and connectivity to such service providers who use BSNL’s infrastructure network.
BSNL’s aggressive entry in the infrastructure space should set alarm bells ringing for private players since BSNL’s network reach within the country especially the rural and remote areas is unmatchable.
Interestingly last month, Datacom entered into infrastructure agreement with Aircel which in turn entered into agreement with BSNL. Now with Datacom also entering into agreement with BSNL, the logic behind the $ 400 million deal with Aircel remains unexplained.
Datacom has also awarded a $ 200 million IT outsourcing contract to IBM last month. |
