Google aims to venture into offering mobile handsets with soon to be launched Nexus One
TT Bureau |  |  15 Dec 2009

In the new age economy which is increasingly drifting to a services oriented ecosystem and where traditional manufacturers are racing against time to adopt a services oriented approach in their business offerings, world’s leading digital services provider, Google is all set to assume a new role of a manufacturer with plans all set to launch a mobile phone.

The mobile phone will be based on its now popular Android operating system. Android is rapidly gaining traction in the handsets industry mainly because of its user-friendly architecture and on top of that the fact that it can support most of the Google services.

Google has not made any official announcement but a corporate blog of the company, mentions and displays photos of the mobile phone which is speculated to be launched within a month. Employees of the company have already been provided the phone as a testing measure.

Google may keep the phone unlocked to any network unlike Apple which offers its handsets as a bundled scheme. But industry trends especially in USA, do not show favour to such strategies as it smartphone sales are mainly linked to bundled offers.

HTC is manufacturing the phone for Google which will be branded under Google name as Nexus One.

Nexus One is being pitched against Apple’s iPhone 3G for comparison.

For Google the move forms its rapid diversification having started as a search engine service provider, to messaging services, video content, social networking mediums, digital operating system, mobile operating system, advertising services to name a few.

For market leaders such as Nokia, the move may add to woes as it is already facing tough time from new players such as Apple.
