Huawei under CBI scanner; six BSNL officials too face heat for helping the vendor win contract
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  05 Apr 2010

India’s top intelligence agency CBI will soon register cases against six officials of the government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) for helping Huawei win contract worth billions of dollars for supplying GSM equipment to the company.

Sources said that Intelligence agencies had sent a report to the prime minister’s office (PMO) saying that BSNL officials have violated rules to help Huawei win the contract despite objections that the company poses threat to India’s security.

The PMO forwarded the complaint to the chief vigilance commissioner (CVC), who after going through the complaint has forwarded it to the CBI.

The case relates to purchase of GSM equipment. When CBI enquiry begins, it is expected to cover all the earlier orders also.

This will pose big trouble for the Chinese company, which is always under one controversy or another due to its alleged links with the Chinese army. The company officials, though, officially and outrightly deny any link with the Chinese army.
