No outcome is expected in the meeting scheduled today between the officials of Huawei Technologies and the Department of Telecommunications to discuss the issue of security clearance.
Huawei top officials, who have come from China, will present their view point on the security aspect. However, the Indian security agencies - IB and RAW - are convinced that Huawei is part of Chinese spy network. They have cited its links with PLA as evidence against it.
However, the bigger embarrassment for the Chinese officials may be the issue of corrupt practices that Huawei officials are allegedly involved in India. Corruption is a serious issue in China and officials involved in corruption are executed.
Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) has already asked India’s investigative agency CBI to investigate the issue of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) officials involved in corruption while buying Huawei equipment.
Sources said that the DoT may not discuss this issue in today'''s meeting as CBI has not yet registered case against the BSNL officials and Huawei. This may take a couple of weeks.
If Huawei is banned in India (may be indirectly) then many countries in the world may follow Indian example and may not allow their operators to buy Huawei equipment.
The company has however strongly refuted any professional wrong doing to bag the BSNL GSM contract.
"Huawei has played an integral and a positive role in developing the Indian telecom industry in the last ten years and will continue to add value by providing latest technology which are safe and secure and meet international security standards to its India based customers,” said a company spokesperson.
"Huawei has excellent professional relationship with all its India customers including BSNL largely based on mutual professional trust developed over the decade due to providing innovative technology and solutions which "future proofs" investments of all our customers,” added the spokesperson. "Huawei has successful operations in over 100 countries globally and provides networks to 45 of the world''s top 50 telecom operators, hence Huawei has always played a contributory role in developing the overall telecom eco-system.”
