After Ambani brothers’ truce, RCom-MTN merger talks gain momentum
TT Correspondent |  Mumbai |  01 Jun 2010

The recently announced truce between Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani may lead to change in fortunes for reliance Communications.

Leading global daily, Financial Times reported on Monday that South African operator, MTN is expected to hold a board meeting to discuss not only proposed move to buy Orascom’s assets in Algeria and other African countries, but also to discuss a potential renegotiation with Reliance Communications.

However the same report says that MTN has not confirmed about the possibility of such a meeting.

It may be remembered that in 2008, Reliance Communications and MTN entered into talks for a proposed merger. The talks however failed when Anil Ambani’s elder brother, Mukesh Ambani’s Group staked the first right of refusal for stake offloading in Reliance Communications.

Bharti Airtel and MTN had explored another proposed merger between the two entities earlier in last fiscal. However the talks failed due to the complex nature of the proposed merged entity.
