NSN-Motorola deal to have less impact on India market
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  19 Jul 2010

Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) buying Motorola's telecom network equipment business for $1.2 billion will not have much impact in India. Motorola is not an important player in India, while NSN is one of the largest equipment suppliers.

The deal will give NSN a stronghold in the North American market. NSN will become the second largest telecom equipment manufacturer after Ericsson.

Motorola’s India business in infrastructure equipment is limited to the PSUs. It has set up GSM network for Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) in Delhi. For BSNL, Motorola supplied equipment in the South zone in an earlier tender. The company did not participate in the BSNL tender for 93 million lines. During phase V of expansion, it was disqualified and later went to the court. In private sector, it has supplied equipment to RCOM. However, it is not a significant order.

NSN is a large player in India and almost all the operators have its network. It is also equipment supplier for BSNL.
