To help the flood victims in Uttarakhand, telecom operator Vodafone has set up 19 fully operational helpline centers in severely affected areas where it has distributors and service points.
The company has also set up two helpline centres at Jolly Grant and Sahasdhara Helipads and providing Chhota credit of Rs 10 to 40,000 eligible customers and credited talktime of Rs 1000 to helpline numbers yesterday. The service is also being made available to about 80,000 Vodafone roaming customers. All those who need to make calls can visit these outlets and use the service for free.
It has also offered free phone service to the affected people, who are brought to these helipads after evacuation. Mobile charging units have been also been set up at both these helipads. A4 size posters of Government Disaster Management Center (DMC) numbers have been pasted at all these helpline centers.
Google has launched Person Finder, an application which can provide information and help find people stranded in flood ravaged areas of the Himalayan province.
According to a Google blogpost, the data entered into the app can be accessed by anyone which can help the media agaencies, NGOs and non-governmental agencies. They can contribute to the database and receive updates by using the Person Finder API based on the PFIF open standard.
According to official reports, 556 bodies have been recovered 30,000 people had been evacuated till now from the hills. Thousands are still stranded.
