Airtel becomes first Indian mobile operator to cross 100 mn subscriber mark

India’s GSM progress for the month of June 2009 observed a moderate monthly growth rate of 2.9% with 8.89 million new subscribers added during the month taking the total GSM subscriber base mark to 315.78 million.

Leading service provider, Bharti Airtel crossed the 100 million mark during the month for its mobile services, adding 2.8 million new subscribers and thereby taking its total count to 102.37 million. Its market share at the end of June 2009 stands at 32.42 % in the GSM space. It recorded a 2.83 % monthly growth rate. Following it is Vodafone Essar with a subscriber base of 76.5 million and market share of 24.21 %. Vodafone added 2.36 million subscribers in June at a monthly growth rate of 3.2 %.

Aircel witnessed the highest growth rate of 5.38 % with 1.11 million new subscriber additions. The operator’s market share reached 6.9% along with a total subscriber base of 21.8 million.

Idea look set to overtake BSNL in terms of subscriber base as it scaled to 47 million subscribers while BSNL’s subscriber base stood at 49 million. Idea added 1.6 million subscribers while BSNL added 0.9 million subscribers.

Bihar appeared the highest growing circle across the country with a monthly growth rate of 5.15 % followed by Orissa at 4.92 %.

Interestingly Delhi and Chennai which have attained more than 100 % penetration level, continue to grow with growth rates of 1.98 % and 1.53 % respectively.
