Cisco enhances edge router density designed for video and mobile internet applications
TT Bureau |  |  25 Aug 2009

Global networking major, Cisco today announced the worldwide availability of its enhanced edge router, the Cisco Aggregation Services Router 9000 Series which will now come with double density.

Cisco has now introduced a single slot 16 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GE) line card, delivering over 100 Gbps. Cisco claims this speed is faster than any other forwarding module available. The new line card in conjunction with ASR 9000’s scalability, helps in enabling the platform to lead industry in density and scalability.

Cisco further claims that the new line card is designed for up to 400G-per-slot capability.

Cisco says that the new router is designed keeping in mind the future needs to have high capacity.

For video and mobile internet growth, the router offers scalability to grow to 320 x 10 GE or 32 x 100 GE per system. Cisco says the ASR 9000 is now geared for the zettabyte era with a 6.4 terabit per second capacity. Cisco also says that the new Edge Router is designed to be more efficient and environment friendly as it helps in reducing carbon footprint.

For video applications, the ASR9000 incorporates Cisco Advanced Video Services Module (AVSM), which enables terabytes of streaming capacity at the aggregation edge while simultaneously offering content caching, ad insertion, fast channel change and error correction.

For mobile service providers, the system claims to offer six times the capacity of competing products to Carrier Ethernet mobile backhaul. According to the company, all Cisco ASR 9000 line cards are SyncE-ready meaning that they inherently work with cell site routers to enable seamless mobile handoffs. This ultimately results in saving cost on dedicated slots for additional synchronization cards.

"Since we launched the Cisco ASR 9000, it has been deployed in a wide range of edge applications from carrier Ethernet, IP RAN, and consumer and business services," says Praveen Akkiraju, vice president and general manager, carrier routing business unit, Cisco.  "This breadth of capability, coupled with its scale and Cisco IOS-XR, ensures that the Cisco ASR 9000 is the premier edge solution for service providers."
