TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  26 Mar 2010

Cellular Operator, Aircel which presently is promoting its initiative to save the tiger population in India under its ‘save Our Tigers’ initiative has roped in NDTV as media partner while actor, Amitabh Bachchan will serve as the brand ambassador for the initiative.

The initiative aims to spread awareness about tiger conservation and save tigers from extinction.

NDTV will host a show anchored by Vikram Chandra with an aim to engage all the key stakeholders and tiger experts to voice their opinion on what needs to be done to protect the tigers. Stories and documentaries related to the issue will also be telecast.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Prannoy Roy, Chairman, NDTV Ltd, said, “We were the first ones to draw the attention of citizens and government to the rapid decline of tiger population in India, two years back. Our signature campaign ‘Save The Tiger’ led to the setting up of Special Tiger Protection Force by the Prime Minister. We are happy that Aircel has adopted this cause on a larger scale. Our association with Aircel will add a fresh impetus to these efforts and we hope to persuade policy makers to take concrete steps to save our tigers. We urge people throughout India to support this movement.”

Gurdeep Singh, COO, Aircel added, “Aircel is a strong supporter of CSR initiatives, with ‘Save Our Tigers’ as one of its core initiative. The cause of the Tiger cuts across all segments and is our National Animal. Our support to this cause is long term. The recent 1411 campaign highlighted the urgency of the situation and appealed to citizens to embrace the cause. Aircel has now partnered with NDTV for special tiger programs, as the logical next step, to provide a platform for conservationists and concerned citizens to participate and speak up and to provide a voice to those who are battling to save the tiger.”

Other programmes planned under the initiative include ‘Then and Now’, ‘Wake Up Mr. Minister’, ’Wow Tiger’, ‘factoids on tigers. Messages from celebrities will also be showcased.

There will be a live non-stop programming for a day dedicated to the topic.

Pledging his support as the Campaign’s ambassador, Amitabh Bachchan added, “Tiger is symbolic of India's wildlife wealth and is in danger because of the rampant poaching and ineffectiveness of our systems to stop its killing. Collective action is the need of the hour. It is for the government, wildlife experts, the media and the public to come together and effect a change. It is our responsibility to not only initiate a public movement but also ensure that it gains momentum across the nation.”
