A global consortium including Bharti Airtel launched an undersea cable connecting between Japan and the West Coast of the US with an aim to provide high-capacity bandwidth access across the Pacific.
Other players in the consortium include Global Transit, Google, KDDI Corp, Pacnet and SingTel.
The cable system is 9,620 km long and was announced in February, 2008. The system is built for an investment valued at $ 300 million.
"This is in line with our vision to offer multiple paths and create a robust undersea cable infrastructure for our customers. Unity cable system will provide enhanced and seamless global connectivity, as it is connected to other cable systems further enhancing connectivity to Asia," said Bharti Airtel Executive Director-Enterprise Services Rajan Swaroop.
Bharti said that its investments in Unity, is a part of its plans to expand its global network through its ownership of 'i2i' submarine cable system and consortium ownership in other global undersea cable systems like SEA-ME-WE 4, EIG, I-ME-WE and AAG. |
