Uninor to refund unutilized pre-paid balances to customers in Mumbai
TT Correspondent |  |  25 Feb 2013

Uninor which closed down its operation in Mumbai said that it has started the balance refund process in Mumbai and would immediately begin offering porting codes to its Mumbai subscribers.

“Till Sunday, Uninor has already disbursed an approximate amount of over Rs. 4  lacs as refunds. This initiative is now being publically announced and scaled up” it said in a statement.

Uninor closed down its operations in Mumbai after midnight on February 16 after the Supreme Court on Friday ordered all operators that did not win spectrum in the previous auctions to close down services immediately.

Last month Uninor had said that it would be difficult for it participate in the bid for Mumbai, if the reserve price for 1800 Mhz spectrum is not brought down by atleast 50%.

Terming this exercise as an unprecedented in scale, the company said that it seeks the cooperation of all its subscribers in Mumbai to help conduct the refund process in an orderly manner.

“Uninor has deployed its entire staff from the Mumbai circle as well as moved resources from each of its operating circles across India and the corporate headquarters to manage and implement the refund process in Mumbai”, it said.

Telenor which was a part of the joint venture with Unitech Group has parted ways with the later following the 2G scam and has find a new partner in Mumbai-based Lakshdeep Investments & Finance. Uninor will also sign roaming agreements with other operators to ensure that all Uninor customers get seamless connectivity when travelling to Mumbai. “All Uninor customers from Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat and other circles will continue to be able to use their Uninor phones in Mumbai” it had said,

“I am proud to see the Uninor team choosing to focus their efforts during this difficult time towards our customers. Refunding unutilized balance, though a daunting exercise, is also the right thing to do, the very least we can for our customers affected by this sudden Court ordered closure in Mumbai,” said Sigve Brekke, Managing Director of Uninor.

“We have been requesting the TRAI to allow number portability for our Mumbai customers. We are thankful to the regulator for accepting our request. Since we had already put the entire process in place while awaiting approvals for launch, Uninor can start providing MNP codes to customers immediately,” Brekke added.

It said that that refunds will be available at 12 Uninor company and franchisee stores to start with for a period of 15 days. The number of stores will be doubled and time period extended should the need arise. The company will also incentivize its franchisees for each successful refund.

“Subscribers are requested to carry their Uninor SIM cards and a proof of identity of the individual receiving the claim. Uninor will verify the unitilised balance on the SIM and pay out cash refunds on the spot” Uninor said.

MNP port out services will be available exclusively from the helpline number 9175091750 and does not require customers to visit the stores. Through a simple process, port-out codes will be provided to customers over the same call instantly.

As announced earlier, Uninor’s services are continuing uninterrupted in the six circles of Maharashtra and Goa, Gujarat, UP East, UP West, Bihar and Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh. In these circles, fresh spectrum for 20 years has already been secured.
