Interview

Telecom operators are looking forward to deploy green wireless solutions

Pankaj Gandhi
Director, Wireless Sales, India, CommScope

  TT Correspondent |  | 24/02/2012

Q: How do you look at Indian infrastructure solutions market and their stand in the global scenario?

A: India is witnessing very interesting trends in the telecom industry at present. 2G will continue to maintain the momentum with subscriber base crossing 850 million. 3G services are in the early stages of launch with commercial services yet to be rolled out in many service zones. 4G/LTE is in active consideration for rollout by BWA license winners and initial rollouts can be expected mid 2012. Voice traffic is still seen as the predominant contributor for the next few years; alongside voice, data, and video will become the core focus areas over time with maturing of 3G and 4G services. Multiple technologies choices will definitely assure superior experience and quality of service to subscribers.

Though bit delayed and slow, Indian customers have started picking pace on data. Data capacities eat into bandwidth and a very reliable and rugged backhaul infrastructure is being planned by most of the operators. Our analysis is that it will be a mix of Fiber and MW. Similar trend is seen elsewhere across all matured markets.

As new services and applications take shape, a shift in the focus of service providers from high quantitative growth to network quality can be expected. Another key area to watch will be alternate back-up energy for telecom sites as operators become more conscious of deploying environment- friendly technologies. In addition, throughout the world there has been a huge spike in interest in the provision of location information to mobile phone users, and that is true in India too. In addition to commercial uses of mobile location, this information can also be helpful to government agencies involved in public safety and law enforcement. India's wireless operators are in various stages of investing in their network infrastructure to enable the determination and delivery of accurate location and relevant information for its subscribers.

Q: What response are you getting in India? What are your plans for Indian operators?

A: Commscope is a well recognized name within the Indian telecom industry. We have a strong relationship with our customers and we get encouraging and positive response from our customers, channels and partners.

Commscope believes in working closely with customers and educating the market on right concepts rather than one time sales. We are here with long term vision and want to be perceived as ‘trusted advisors’ by our customers. We invest a lot in proactively bringing the right messages in the industry like in ‘PIM happens’ focused on Inter Modulation menaces; ‘Gambling with Network Availability’ on MW antennas for backhaul and last mile; ‘Energy Conversation’ and many more.

CommScope’s FXL smooth wall RF feeder cable is doing very well in Indian market as the replacement to traditional copper cable. Recently, Idea Cellular and TATA Teleservices made a joint public announcement with us on this cable. We are increasingly focusing on the production of energy- efficient equipments and solutions. The company is committed towards a greener environment and has recently launched an energy conservation initiative that supports the industry's global efforts in reducing power consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs. We have also launched our 4G Base Station Antennas portfolio in 2.3 GHz for our BWA customers- which have been well appreciated. Our total site solutions span the entire RF landscape, helping wireless carriers manage increasing cell site complexity and optimize network and backhaul planning, capacity, coverage, and performance. Another area where we see market maturing in midterm is in building coverage. Commscope is global leader in Coverage and Capacity solution offering and brings ready international experience.
